A Matter Of Conscience

The year was 1914 and war was on the horizon in Britain. Of the roughly 2,500 Adventist members in the United Kingdom, 130 were conscripted to serve in World War I (WWI). While these men were loyal subjects of the British crown, they were more devoted Christians and felt it was against their conscience to serve as soldiers. Not only would they be forced to carry a weapon, but also forced to serve on Sabbath.

The recent spate of incidents involving well-known athletes and domestic abuse should not distract us from recognizing that this problem is also an unacceptable issue in the church. The Adventist Church is seeking to combat relationship violence in its campaign, End It Now. At the 2014 Summit on Abuse, Ron Flowers, co-director of the world church family ministries department, presented a talk entitled “The God Who Sees.” He acknowledges that many are given the wrong biblical answers on this topic.

When Alina Tudor, a nurse care manager at Adventist Medical Center (AMC) in Portland, Ore., met with a patient named Margaret, she discovered a need beyond typical medical care. Margaret found it impossible to navigate the steps to her home without help. She needed a ramp to her front door. Alina began brainstorming with Don Ingram, AMC engineer for clinics. They connected with Ben Raines, a local Home Depot assistant manager, who offered the necessary materials.

Adventist scholars from around the world have participated in Theology of Ordination Study Committee discussions on behalf of the world church. Further directions from the world church are expected at the 2014 Annual Council and perhaps at the 2015 General Conference session. While many members, especially in North America, are in favor of expanding ordination to women, other members feel strongly that to do so would go against clear biblical teaching.
