Did You Know - June 2008

Because this section is primarily a graphic design in the print version, it is not available here. You can see the Did You Know? page for this month by looking in the print edition of GLEANER or by clicking on the PDF version. To get to the PDF version, click on the underlined MONTH above. You'll see a thumbnail of the cover in the lower right corner. Click on "Downloead PDF magazine" to open the file. Be patient —there are many pages to load, so it takes quite awhile to open the whole file.

Thanks, Dad

The idea of Father’s Day was conceived in Spokane, Wash., when Mayor Sonora Dodd heard a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. The date in June for the first Father’s Day celebration was chosen because it corresponded with the birthday of Dodd's father. Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in 1966, but it was Richard Nixon who, in 1972, signed the public law, making Father’s Day permanent.
